The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association(AHSA)has published a guide for students with hearing loss,to help them navigate both virtual and in-person learning environments for the upcoming school year.
“This school year will present staff and students with a tremendous learning curve,”said Theresa H.Rodgers,MA,CCC-SLP,ASHA 2020 President,in ASHA’s posting.“Many of the changes required to keep everyone safe—such as wearing masks,keeping a distance of six feet,and using online platforms—could impede learning for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.We want educators to be aware that there are many options and techniques for helping these children succeed while also adhering to public health measures.”
For in-person learning,ASHA recommends the use of clear face masks,sound field FM systems for teachers,and consultation with an educational audiologist who specializes in classroom acoustics.Tips for virtual learning include using technology like real-time captioning and interpreters;utilizing front lighting so as not to obscure facial features;and eliminating background noise by muting other participants while they’re not speaking.
